Officially in my 40’s… let’s talk about hormones, recovery & vitality

The information shared in this article is based on my personal experience and is not medical advice. All hormone replacement therapy, peptides, and wellness treatments discussed are being used under the care, supervision, and guidance of a licensed physician through  Ouro Rx. Every person’s body, labs, symptoms, and medical history are different, which is why individualized medical oversight and proper lab work are so important.

My Experience With HRT (testosterone & progesterone), Peptides, and Feeling Like Myself Again

Turning 40 has honestly been one of the best things that’s happened to me physically and mentally.

Not because I found some “magic fix.” And definitely not because hormones suddenly transformed my life overnight.

It’s because I finally started paying attention to how I actually felt instead of accepting “you’re just getting older” as an answer.

As someone who trains hard, works long hours, raises kids, and really enjoys fitness, a few years ago I started noticing things felt… off.

Things like:

  • Brain fog

  • Increased anxiety

  • Lower libido

  • Poor sleep

  • Low energy

  • Harder recovery

That’s what led me to hormone replacement therapy through  Ouro Rx

And honestly? The biggest changes for me weren’t even physical.

My Experience With Testosterone Therapy

I started testosterone therapy at the end of 2024 under medical supervision after comprehensive labs and symptom evaluation. Following my 2024 competition season, I was experiencing low energy, brain fog, poor recovery, reduced libido, and was struggling to maintain muscle despite consistent training and nutrition.

Yes, I noticed:

  • Better libido

  • Better muscle retention

  • Improved recovery in the gym

But the biggest shifts were mental.

I felt:

  • Mentally clearer

  • Less anxious

  • More focused

  • More emotionally resilient

  • More energized throughout the day

I also started sleeping better, which created a ripple effect into everything else:
better recovery, better workouts, better mood, and more consistent energy.

And no, testosterone did not suddenly turn me into the hulk overnight. Social media has wildly distorted how people think therapeutic testosterone works in women.

When medically monitored and dosed appropriately, the goal is optimization, not masculinization.

How Long Does Testosterone Take to “Kick In”?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions online.

Hormone therapy is not like taking pre-workout and suddenly feeling superhuman an hour later. It’s more like slowly turning the lights back on in a dim room.

And perhaps most importantly: there is no universal timeline.

Some women notice subtle improvements within a few weeks. Others may not notice meaningful changes for several months. In some cases, women expect hormones to do all the heavy lifting while overlooking other factors that can significantly impact how they feel, including:

  • Sleep
  • Nutrition
  • Stress levels
  • Training
  • Recovery
  • Inflammation
  • Underlying health conditions

Hormones don’t exist in a vacuum. They’re one piece of a much larger picture.

For some women, early improvements may include better sleep, improved mood, increased energy, or less brain fog. Others may first notice improvements in libido, recovery, motivation, or overall well-being. Changes in body composition and muscle retention often take even longer and are heavily influenced by training and nutrition habits.

Personally, I noticed improvements in mental clarity, anxiety, sleep, and overall energy before I noticed many of the physical benefits.

The biggest takeaway is this: don’t compare your timeline to someone else’s on social media.

Hormone optimization is highly individualized, which is why proper lab work, realistic expectations, and ongoing medical oversight are so important. The goal isn’t to chase a quick fix. The goal is to create an environment where your body can function and perform at its best over time.

What to Look for in a Hormone Telehealth Company

When choosing a telehealth provider, don’t just look at the products they offer. Look at their standards. Ouro Rx works with pharmacy partners that maintain respected industry certifications and accreditations, helping ensure quality, compliance, and patient safety throughout the process.

This part is important because hormone optimization has exploded online lately… and not always in a good way.

There’s a huge difference between:

  • medically guided optimization
    and

  • influencer-driven “biohacking” sales tactics

A quality hormone telehealth company should:

1. Require Comprehensive Lab Work

Not just throwing medications at symptoms.

Hormones are interconnected. You need someone looking at:

  • testosterone

  • estrogen

  • progesterone

  • thyroid markers

  • inflammation markers

  • metabolic health

  • overall symptom picture

Ouro Rx does a very good job of emphasizing individualized evaluation instead of one-size-fits-all protocols.

2. Customize Treatment Plans

Good providers understand that two women with identical testosterone levels may feel completely different.

Symptoms matter.

Lifestyle matters.

Training matters.

Cycle status matters.

One-size-fits-all dosing is a red flag.

Ouro’s approach is centered around personalized care and ongoing monitoring rather than “here’s your prescription, good luck.”

3. Monitor and Adjust

Hormones are not static.

What works six months ago may not be what your body needs now.

Your provider should:

  • repeat labs

  • reassess symptoms

  • make adjustments

  • prioritize long-term health over aggressive dosing

4. Be Willing to Say “Not Yet”

This is actually one of the biggest green flags.

A responsible provider doesn’t just prescribe everything possible immediately.

Which brings me to progesterone.

My Experience With Progesterone

I want to be transparent about this because I think transparency matters.

I initially started on a small dose of progesterone because I was experiencing heavier periods and some cycle-related symptoms. My labs also tend to show that I naturally run on the lower side for progesterone.

But after continued monitoring, updated labs, and a recent ultrasound, I realized I personally wanted to address potential underlying uterine issues first before adding additional hormones strictly for optimization versus true necessity.

It turns out some of the heaviness and symptoms I was experiencing may be more related to old endometriosis related changes and what’s going on structurally in my uterus rather than simply low progesterone alone.

So after discussing everything with my provider, I decided to discontinue progesterone for now until it becomes more necessary down the road.

And honestly, I think this reflects what responsible hormone care should look like.

Hormone optimization should be individualized and evolve as your body and health picture change over time.

Other Therapies I’m Enjoying Right Now

Outside of HRT, I’ve also been incorporating a few supportive wellness therapies that I’ve personally really enjoyed lately:

  • Vitality Stack

  • Glutathione

  • Pentadeca

What I like about these is that they focus more on supporting overall wellness, recovery, and vitality rather than chasing some extreme shortcut.

I think social media has become very focused on rapid fat loss and “performance enhancing” solutions while overlooking the importance of foundational health.

Sometimes improving:

  • sleep

  • inflammation

  • recovery

  • hydration

  • nutrient support

  • stress resilience

  • energy production

can make a massive difference in how you feel, perform, and recover.

And when your body feels better overall, it becomes much easier to train consistently, recover properly, and stay on track with your goals.

Vitality Stack

The Vitality Stack is a wellness blend offered through Ouro Rx that is designed to support overall vitality, recovery, energy production, and performance.

The goal isn’t necessarily to create a dramatic feeling overnight, but rather to support many of the foundational systems that help you feel and function at your best, including:

  • Energy and stamina
  • Recovery and resilience
  • Mental clarity and focus
  • Circulation and blood flow
  • Cellular health
  • Overall wellness and vitality

For me personally, I’ve noticed it feels supportive from an energy, recovery, and performance standpoint. It’s one of those therapies that fits well into the “optimize the foundation” approach rather than chasing a quick fix.

Glutathione

Glutathione is often referred to as the body’s “master antioxidant.”

It’s commonly used to support:

  • detoxification pathways

  • immune health

  • inflammation support

  • recovery

  • overall cellular health

Pentadeca

Pentadeca is commonly discussed for:

  • recovery support

  • inflammation modulation

  • tissue support

  • overall wellness and vitality

None of these are magic solutions.

They don’t replace:

  • hard training

  • proper nutrition

  • sleep

  • consistency

But they can help support the systems that allow your body to perform and recover better, which can absolutely help you get more out of the work you’re already putting in.

Hormones and Peptides Are NOT Magic

This part matters.

Hormones and peptides can help support your body, recovery, and overall wellness, but they are not substitutes for discipline or effort.

I think many people misunderstand that.

If the work in the gym and kitchen is not there, no peptide or hormone protocol is going to magically create results.

These therapies work best when they enhance the healthy habits you’re already building.I also want to make something very clear: you absolutely can build muscle, improve your body composition, and feel healthier WITHOUT hormones or peptides.

Progressive training, proper nutrition, sleep, and consistency will always be the foundation.

These therapies are not requirements and they are not shortcuts. For me personally, they’ve felt more like supportive tools that help optimize recovery, energy, wellness, and quality of life so I can get more out of the healthy habits I’m already practicing.

The basics still matter most. ALWAYS.

Final Thoughts

For me, hormone optimization wasn’t about chasing extremes.

It was about feeling healthy, clear-headed, strong, feminine, resilient, and energized again.

At 40, I feel more connected to my body than I did in my 30s.

And I think more women deserve honest conversations around hormones without shame or fear.

If you’re considering exploring hormone health, work with qualified medical professionals, get proper labs, ask questions, and focus on long-term wellness over quick fixes.

That’s one thing I genuinely appreciate about  Ouro RX. Their focus is on individualized care, proper monitoring, and helping patients make informed decisions based on their own health picture.
